The state in the budget on Tuesday allocated Rs 133 crore for the scheme, under which Rs 1 lakh will be provided to first and second daughters of a family on attaining 18 years of age, for their wedding or higher education. The DyCM told the state assembly house that the scheme, the first-ofits-kind by the Gujarat government, will help prevent female foeticide, promote education of girls, and provide a substantial sum to fund the the higher education and weddings of girls.

Like the other state government schemes such as Haryana (Ladli Scheme), Karnataka (Bhagyashree Scheme), Rajasthan (Raj Shree Yojana), Maharashtra (Majhi Kanya Bhagyashree Scheme), Madhya Pradesh(Ladli Laxmi Yojana) and West Bengal (Kanya Prakalpa Scheme), State Government of Gujarat also announced Vahli Dikri Yojana. Under this scheme, the government will provide financial assistance to the girl child. Beneficiaries will get this assistance in three stages. For the successful implementation of the scheme in the state, the government has sanctioned 133 crore rupees in the state budget for this scheme.

What is Vahali Dikri Yojana?

The Vahali Dikri Yojana (Dear Daughter Scheme) provides financial support up to ₹1,10,000 to eligible girl children in Gujarat. The assistance is given in three stages:

1. Birth / Early years assistance – ₹4,000

2. 1st Standard admission support – ₹6,000

3. Higher education or marriage assistance (at age 18) – ₹1,00,000

• Beneficiary must be a permanent resident of Gujarat.

• Girl child must be born on or after 2 August 2019.

• Annual family income should be below ₹2,00,000.
